課程概述

*This course is taught in Chinese. (英文教材;中文授課)

This course aims to familiarize students with fundamental skills concerning academic English writing. This course includes two hours of lecture plus one hour of skill-based hands-on tasks and/or discussion. Topics to be covered include common rhetorical patterns, paragraph/essay developments, and essential academic English writing skills and strategies.

Course Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will
1. Understand and apply common rhetoric modes in academic writing;
2. Produce English paragraphs and essays with good logic and coherence;
3. Demonstrate familiarity with essential academic English writing skills and strategies;
4. Edit and proofread their own and their peers’ writing.

Course Content:

1. Preliminaries to Writing: Reading, Vocabulary Building, Sentence Structure, Functional Approach to Grammar, Unity and Coherence, Organization
2. Patterns of Paragraph/Essay Writing: Process, Cause and Effect, Comparison and Contrast, Classification, Argumentation
 
課程要求
Course Requirements:
1. Students are required to attend all classes. No more than three excused absences are permitted.
2. Active participation in class discussions is required.
3. Quizzes and a comprehensive final exam are included in this course. No make-up quizzes will be allowed.
4. Writing assignments are carefully scheduled as stages toward the fulfillment of the course’s objectives. Late assignments will not be accepted.
5. Plagiarism or cheating will result in zero point for the assignment/quiz/exam. Students copying and pasting any sentence or phrase that contains more than four words from any form of material without citation may risk plagiarism.
6. Students should take weekly tests and the final exam.
‧ Students should make time for the final exam, a joint exam that traditionally takes place on the Wednesday evening in the final week (18:30-20:10, 20/12/2023; at Main Campus).
‧ Students who do not take the final exam will be failed.
‧ If students cannot take tests as scheduled, make-up tests are available and there will be a 20% reduction in the score.
